Each routine is fully demonstrated on screen and packed with high energy, low impact movements. 5-a-day fitness is easy to fit into curriculum time and there's no additional teacher preparation or training required. Children simply watch, join in, have fun and get fit!

All routines are graded for difficulty from 1 star = Easy to 5 stars = Challenging.

The easy-to-install computer software is specifically designed for use across school computer networks and for projection onto interactive white boards. With 5-a-day Fitness School Network Software your whole school can enjoy 5-a-day Fitness at just the click of a mouse!

Primarily aimed at Key Stage 1 and 2, 5-a-day Fitness can be enjoyed by all ages from reception to secondary.

Detailed picture cards (ready to print directly from the School Network Software) accompany every routine. Audio CDs with full verbal instructions and instrumental music versions are also available; these are ideal for promoting creativity, and for use with leadership schemes, allowing pupils to practice their movement demonstration and verbal communication skills.

5-a-day Fitness can be adapted for children with Special Educational Needs (SEN).

Certificates of achievement (also available to print directly from the School Network Software) can be awarded to pupils for participation in the 5-a-day Fitness programme.

In January 2008 The PE & Sport Strategy for Young People continued to build on the strategy laid out by PE & School Sport and Club Links, thereby reaffirming their commitment to ensuring 100% of pupils participate in at least two hours of high quality PE and school sport in schools each week [PE&SSYP Leaflet Jan 2008].

Is your school on target?

Regular participation in physical activity can reduce obesity, improve fitness levels and, by improving concentration and self-esteem, can help attendance, behaviour and attainment. Pupils experiencing high quality PE and school sport are more likely to pursue active and healthy lifestyles [DfES March 2004].

Health and Safety

When using 5-a-day Fitness please ensure each child has enough space to move freely without risking injury to themselves or others. Whilst changing into PE kit is not necessary, please ensure that clothing, especially footwear, is suitable for movement. Please also secure any loose items and remove jewellery.

The routines vary in difficulty; if a pupil is unable to perform some of the movements simply replace the movement with an easier one, or try a different routine. Upper and lower body movements can be interchanged, or steps substituted for jumps, depending on each child's needs and ability.

If a pupil experiences any discomfort during a routine it is recommended they stop immediately.

Please ensure pupils have access to drinking water before and after each routine.
